My aim with this piece was to convey a feeling of collaborative movement up into the open sky, away from an unstable house of cards. The meaning for me is that survivors can shake up systems of oppression together and find their voice, their wings, peace, and freedom.

I was inspired by the artistry of Diana Beltran Herrera, a designer who creates exquisitely detailed and realistic paper birds. My project explores the characteristics and personality of the blue jay using shapes, colors, and textures, plus it integrates movement with wings that can open and close.

20" x 10" x 10" 3D diorama
Materials: foam core, gouache paint, faux leaves and vines, glass stones, wood branches, paper containers, plastic, hot glue, mini lights with batteries
Enigmatic means difficult to interpret or understand; puzzling; mysterious; ambiguous; obscure; mind-boggling.
My concept to this "invisible" word included veiled or obscured face, colors of blues, purples, and grey, unusual textures, and sparkly details with an ambiguous message. I tried to strike a balance between veiled/obscured and intriguing/mysterious.
